MS: Day 6 of 7
Posted in ashtanga yoga on 07/16/2008 07:26 am by karenWhat to say about the Matthew Sweeney workshop… I don’t want to go into too much detail, as I am typing this on the iPhone, which is an enormous pain.
One thing I know for sure: it rocks to just do yoga all day. Mysore practice in the morning. Next accomplishment? Have breakfast. Next accomplishment? Reading or a nap. Adjustment workshop from noon ’til 3. Early dinner. Read. Go to bed.
Heaven.
Here’s my high level review of Matthew as a teacher:
1) He is absolutely respectful of each individual’s personal and psychological space.
2) He is all about empowering the practitioner.
3) Neither 1 nor 2 is a marketing gimmick.
Interestingly, he seems more free of transference issues than any teacher or professor I’ve ever dealt with. And this does not come at the expense of humor or charm.
He seems absolutely committed to teaching individuals, and equally committed to not creating psychological entanglements. Maybe this is a characteristic of traveling teachers? Whatever. It is incredibly refreshing.
If you need (or want) to learn to contain your own practice within your self, you might want to spend some time practicing with Matthew.

I saw a comment on one of the blogs from you and thought “Hey! If she can comment then she better give us a MS workshop update!”
So glad to hear that it’s going well. Is this the same session that Patrick was going to?

I missed Matthews workshop in London the other week. Did you take the jump back/through workshop too? if so how was it, any good tips/tricks?

Yes, Patrick’s here. I’m sure he’ll post his impressions, too.
And yes, he did an afternoon on jump backs and throughs. I’ll talk more about it when I’m back to a proper keyboard.

Matthew sounds awesome. Tim Miller is like that too–focused on each individual and really able to see thier issues. It’s cool that you met Patrick.

Hi Karen
Thanks, I was looking forward to some observations from you, and look forward to reading more. I just ordered the latest book by MS and hope I can take a workshop with him sometime in the future.
Cheers,
Arturo
